Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

What does ADHD mean and what are its symptoms?
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, widely known as ADHD, is the hereditary ailment in neurons and behavior of up to 5 out of 100 children.  It also pertains to the slow development of a kid's maturity, making him incompetent even of the simplest daily tasks for living. ADHD is already manifested in the early years of a kid. Since the name itself already aptly describes this illness, parents should keenly observe their children to detect ADHD right away. If a kid is highly but irrationally active or if he lacks focus and attention and acts without even thinking, it is possible that he has Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Though most of its symptoms are behavioral and not physical, they are visible and can easily be recognized. For one, it is difficult to give instructions to a kid with ADHD. Another indication of ADHD is if a child has difficulty establishing eye contact and his actions are in random--- he immediately stops doing one thing to do another. Oftentimes, when you ask a child with ADHD to listen, he will ignore you and will keep on doing what he wants. An ADHD kid is also easily distracted and has difficulty controlling his emotions.

What are the causes and risk factors of ADHD?
Scientists have not given any exact explanation to the causes of this illness. All they have are theories, which are yet to be proven factual. Most scientists have already ruled out the surroundings and the society as factors. However, they have affirmed that the inappropriate upbringing of the kids by the parents has no connection to ADHD. What most experts agree upon is the theory that ADHD is genetic. For this reason, a thorough investigation of the family members' health background is often done by doctors during consultations to ascertain the probable causes.

Medical experts also said that there is a great possibility that ADHD is due to the abnormalities of the brain's neurons. As for the reasons to why and how these impulses of neurons are atypical apparently remain to be hypothetical.

Although no specific risk factors are identified, the parents' negligence to immediately identify their son's or daughter’s behavioral illness can aggravate the situation. The later they identify the problem, the more difficult the child may adopt to the learning and development process.

How can this behavioral illness be treated?
As of now, no cure for ADHD has been discovered. However, stimulant, non-stimulant, antidepressant drugs, and behavioral management programs are combined to provide remedy for the symptoms. For these cures to be more effective, ADHD should be detected as early as possible. Treatment includes specially-designed activities and therapies to improve the kids' attention span. Close monitoring is advised to protect the children from hurting themselves and others. Behavioral changes are also initiated to aid children in learning the proper management of their actions and emotions.

ADHD kids are still capable of learning and their skills can still be developed. However, unlike other normal children, they need other methods and extra reinforcements to help them absorb what they need to learn. Likewise, the family members and the doctors of the patients should also work hand in hand to ensure that the kids grow healthy notwithstanding ADHD. There might really be no cure yet, but children may still live normally if the optimum progress they can reach is achieved.

How can ADHD be prevented?
Since studies show that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is acquired while the baby is still in his mother's womb, there is a strong possibility that the parents' lifestyles have a connection to it. Hence, parents should be extra cautious of their ways of living. Mothers, most particularly, are advised to stop smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, and taking unprescribed drugs while pregnant. It is a scientific hypothesis that ADHD-afflicted babies are usually born to parents with unhealthy habits.
