Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety triggers the brain to do two things, either fight what might be attacking or flee from the danger.  In some instances, fleeing involves freezing or shutting down to the situation around you.

Similar to how a horse feels when he is being cornered; the body during an anxiety attack feels trapped. If unable to flee the danger, then the body will try and fight the anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety symptoms

The primary symptoms of anxiety disorders are fear and worry. However, anxiety disorders are also characterised by additional emotional and physical symptoms. Below is a list of anxiety symptoms,

  • Chest and abdominal pains
  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Racing pulse
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vertigo
  • Lump in throat
  • Need to go to the bathroom
  • Insomnia
  • Unexpected bursts of anger
  • Irrational thoughts
  • Unable to focus your thoughts
  • Feeling of being out of control and trapped
  • Avoiding other people
  • Fidgeting and restlessness
  • Acute aggravating thought patterns about personal fears
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Nausea
  • Fear of dying
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • Feeling faint

There is treatment available for anxiety attacks. The attacks need to be occurring at least a full month before a clinician will prescribe drug treatment. Holistic treatment is also available in the form of St John’s Wort.   St. John’s Wort has been found effective in treating mild to moderate cases of anxiety and depression.  It does not help stop the severe, debilitating depression that often follows anxiety attacks.

Counseling will be offered and can prove effective for anxiety attacks. Some therapists will instruct their patient in the art of self-hypnosis to help alleviate the acute fear they are experiencing.  The sessions will be focused on having the patient understand the thought process that brings on the attacks.  Seldom will the therapist advise the patient in how to act. The sessions are geared to guiding the patient to understand the thought processes and how to interpret them to alleviate the panic involved.  Unless on prescribed rounds of medications and in therapy, the mind will triumph over the body every time.
