Arthritis

Arthritis is a collective name referring to more than 100 forms of joint tissues' swelling or inflammation. Joints are the body parts where the bones are connected together. Arthritis is a complicated joint illness that can affect people of all ages, but is mostly prevalent among those who are of old age (especially people who are 40 years old and above). It can cause ache in all points of the bones' junctions and may even lead to physical disabilities. This debilitating illness comes in different forms depending on its cause. Some of these are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout arthritis, and juvenile arthritis.

Causes/Risk Factors
Osteoarthritis has a strong correlation with the person's age. The older a person is, the more susceptible he is to this form of arthritis. This disease may also be due to injuries or accidents. Meanwhile, rheumatoid arthritis causes the immune system to destroy its own joint membranes or soft tissues, hence, causing degeneration. Doctors are having difficulty identifying the true cause of this illness, but they are speculating that it is hereditary. There are also discoveries that rheumatoid arthritis is acquired by those with abnormal formations of joint ligaments. On the other hand, gout happens when the uric acid, a derivative from purine, is crystalized. These acid crystals become stacked in the elastic tissues of joints, which lead to infection and swelling.

As opposed to what some people think, kids can also acquire arthritis. Juvenile arthritis can occur to toddlers and teenagers of both sexes. The sad thing about this illness is that it's not easily detected. Several examinations for many weeks are needed to prove that a kid really has this disease. Aside from these factors, experts say that stress and insufficient absorption of nutrients can also aggravate arthritis.

Arthritis Symptoms
Generally, the points of inflammation are aching. On the first attack of arthritis, it might not be so painful yet. It may also begin from one or two points but will little by little spread in the nearer body parts. But as one's affliction gets worst the pain becomes more intense, too. The bone junctions become rigid causing one to have difficulty in moving. The pain may radiate from the feet to the spinal column and to the connected muscles and ligaments. Some arthritis patients always feel too tired but have difficulty sleeping. Arthritis may even cause the joints not to function anymore. If not properly and immediately treated, this can lead to the destruction not only of the joint but of the nearer tissues as well.

Arthritis Treatment
Arthritis should be detected and cured early to avoid the harm it may further cause to one's body. Each arthritis patient should take his medications following his doctor's recommendation. There are a lot of possible medications for pain, swelling, and infection. In some instances, a surgery is advised especially to those with worst cases of arthritis where the joints have been severely damaged. In a surgery, a joint that has been harmed badly is often replaced by a synthetic one. Therapeutic exercises are also employed to lessen the pain and to bring comfort to the patient whenever arthritis attacks. Since there are varying forms of arthritis, it is best for one to know exactly what form of arthritis he has and what causes it.

Arthritis Prevention
Those types of arthritis that are believed to be hereditary can be triggered anytime. Hence, one should be aware of his family's medical history to check if he has any chance of acquiring it. He should maintain a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine, take enough sleep and rest, stop smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages, avoid food with high sodium content, and drink plenty of water to prevent the accumulation of crystals in his joint tissues.
