Back Pain

Whenever one feels that aching feeling in his back, one illness comes to mindis : back pain or backache. Unlike other afflictions, a back pain should not be a cause of too much concern. According to statistics, almost 80% of the world's population experiences back ache in a certain period of their lives. This is most prevalent to those who are into heavy types of work and who are already of old age. However, if one abruptly and rapidly experiences back pain more often, it is important to give it extra attention and ask for medical advice to make sure that it is not caused by a more serious health problem.

Causes/Risk Factors
There are many reasons a person experiences back pain. Too much stress on any part of  the body normally leads to back pain. It's important to keep in mind that the spinal cord, an important part of the nervous system, is located at the back.  The nerves from the different parts of the body are likewise connected to it. For this reason, the back receives most of the body's stress. As such, muscle strain acquired through overwork, joint dislocation due to injuries or accidents, and improper postures can cause and aggravate dorsopathy.

Besides stress, another risk factor for back pain is obesity. As mentioned, the spine is meant to carry a person's body weight. When a person is overweight, the tendency is for most of the body weight to fall on the back, which will eventually cause it to ache. Moreover, an obese person's sedentary lifestyle causes the spine, especially the lower part, to become more vulnerable. This is because it was found out that lack of exercise can reduce the bone's density, making it weak and more prone to fractures.

Sitting for a long time can also cause back pain. This is because the spine is not cut out for sitting too long. People whose work entails sitting for long are prone to having back pains. The same goes with people whose job requires them to always bend and carry heavy stuff.

Back Pain Symptoms
Back pain, also called dorsopathy, is the quick and rapid sensation in one's back caused by impulses from any or all parts of his spinal cord. These impulses could be from his muscle tissues or from his dense and calcified back bones. It is also possible that the pain is from the cord-like group of fibers in his nervous system. Even the part where one bone is joined by another can be a source of an aching back. As a result of a back pain, one may also feel pain on his lower body and neck as well as his shoulders, arms, and hands.

Treatment
There are easy remedies for a simple back pain. More often than not, pain-relieving medications do. If the muscles are too overworked, a nice and relaxing massage will bring comfort. A hot and cold compress can also lessen the painful sensation. Some therapists also apply a low current of electricity to ease the pain.

Contrary to what people say, a painful back should not be left idle. The truth is that health experts suggest that instead of remaining still, it will help one to recover faster if he moves a little. However, an undergarment for back support should be used.

Depending on the underlying causes of one’s back pain, treatment often varies from simple therapeutic exercises to complicated surgical procedures.

Prevention
Exercises that help a person become more flexible are advised. Likewise, strong muscles can do wonders for a person. It will be best if one finds time to relax after stressful work and avoids strenuous activities. A person should also maintain good posture while sitting, standing, and sleeping. Besides its healthy benefits, good posture makes one look more intelligent and confident.
