Strength Training

What Strength Training Is?
Strength training is an umbrella term that covers all forms of exercise aimed at developing strength, as well as the size of the skeletal muscles. It can help in boosting overall health and it can give important functional benefits, provided that it is performed properly. Strength training can improve the toughness and strength of the ligament, tendon, muscle, and bone. It can also boost both cardiac and joint function and increase the level of good cholesterol. Strength training is an anaerobic activity and it is different from weightlifting, bodybuilding, strongman, and power lifting. But strength training can be part of the training regimen of these sports.

Basic Principles
The basic principles of strength training consist of a manipulation of the number of repetitions, tempo, sets, force applied, and exercise types. The manipulation and control of the routines are important in order to achieve the desired improvement in endurance, strength, and size or shape of the muscles. The combinations of repetitions, exercises, sets, force, and resistance depend on the goals of the individial performing the strength training. This physical activity also demands the use of the so-called "good form," which refers to the proper performance of all the routines and exercises. Failure to do so can result to serious injuries.

Kinds of Strength Training

Resistance Training
This refers to the use of hydraulic or elastic resistance to contraction instead of gravity. Hydraulic resistance gives a fixed amount of resistance throughout the entire exercise depending on the speed of the movement. Meanwhile, elastic resistance gives the greatest resistance towards the end of the movement.

Isometric Training
This type of strength training gives a fixed amount of resistance depending on the force exerted by the muscle. This strengthens the muscles at the specific joint angle wherein the isometric exercise takes place. In contrary, weight training strengthens the muscle all throughout the exercise.

Weight Training
In this type of strength training, individuals can do one to six sets per exercise, as well as one to three exercises per muscle group. But a short break is taken between each set. The duration of the breaks determines the specific energy system that is utilized by the body. Meanwhile, "circuit training," which refers to the performance of the exercises without taking breaks, will get energy from the aerobic energy system. More weight training>>

Benefits of weight training
Strength training offers many health benefits such as increased muscular strength and endurance, improved muscle appearance and tone, improved cardiovascular fitness, and increased bone density. Many individuals perform weight training in order to enhance their physical appearance. While men can develop huge muscles, women are able to improve their physique. Strength training also improves a person's posture and reduces the risk of injuries.

Safety Issues
Strength training is a safe physical exercise provided that it is performed properly. But each type of strength training has its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, weight training is one of the safest forms of this physical activity, especially when the movements are controlled, cautious, and slow. But the slightest mistake in executing the routines can result in an injury. In order to avoid injuries and other discomforts, individuals must follow the rules and standards of proper strength training.
