Ayurveda
Origin Ayurveda is a system that was developed thousands of years ago in India. The word Ayurveda is made up of two words, “Ayu” which means life and “Veda” meaning knowledge, resulting in the translation, “Meaning of Life”. Ancient texts are used as a reference when applying the Ayurveda system to this day. What is it? Ayurveda is holistic, taking into account all aspects of ones being when establishing the health of the body and treatment of aliments It is based on the belief that the universe is made up of the five elements air, fire, water, earth and ether. These elements are present within the human body in the form of the 3 energies (also known as dosha) Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The approach revolves around the correct balance of the 3 energies in the body so that perfect equilibrium is achieved with nature. There are physical and mental characteristics that reflect each dosha and the balancing of these energies is unique to every person. Ayu (Life), as defined in the Ayurveda system, consists of the mind, body, senses and the soul. Great emphasis is placed on the mind and the body with a great amount of information on the relationships between the two provided by the ancient texts. How does it work? Before any sort of treatment or advice is dispensed a clear picture of an individual needs to be established. A practitioner may observe the hair, tongue, nails and query a person to establish which dosha they are more inclined towards (based on the characteristics determined by each dosha). After such analysis, suggestions can then be made as to what lifestyle or diet changes are required to achieve equilibrium for optimum health. General steps can be taken with most people in order to detoxify or cleanse the mind and body before more specific measures are put into place. What can it treat? Ayurveda can be utilized as an aid when one is feeling unbalanced or “down”. Quarterly cleansing sessions are recommended to prepare the body and mind for the seasonal and temperature changes.
