Homeopathy
What is it? /Origins Homeopathy was established in the 1800’s by Samuel Hahnemann, who found that when he ate bark which was used to treat Malaria, he experienced the symptoms associated with Malaria. This concept formed the solid basis behind homeopathy which is the treatment of an illness using a substance that would induce in a healthy person, similar symptoms being suffered. This became known as the “law of similars”. He spent years testing this law with some success devising a technique of dilution so as to not create\aggravate symptoms to the degree that they would actually worsen the problem. What is it used for? Based on the premise behind homeopathy, therapies can be developed for many conditions that exhibit symptoms. The more common uses of homeopathy include colds and flu, allergies, skin problems, depression, back pain and asthma. There has been a focus on the benefits of homeopathy in treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). All homeopaths will suggest that you use homeopathy as a general strengthening of the immune system and balancing of the body and mind. How does it work? The “law of similars” developed by Samuel Hahnemann has formed the foundation for the homeopathic therapies which basically works on the premise that by creating the symptoms of the disease, the body’s ability to deal with and eliminate the disease is strengthened. Though the dilution techniques are aimed at not aggravating conditions, they are meant to trigger the body’s natural healing processes in response to the symptom causing agents. How it doesn't work It is common to draw a direct correlation between the “law of similars” and the workings of immunization. However, unlike immunization, homeopathic remedies are not based on the production of anti-bodies, but rather by stimulating the parts of the body involved in healing. Is it safe? Alcohol and water are the main basis for every homeopathic combination and dilution of natural contents is always quite high with a significantly small decrease in the amount of original agents chosen for treatment. As a result reported side effects or dangers as a direct result of homeopathic therapy are extremely rare. Incorrect or misleading advice from a homeopath would be the most dangerous risk associated with homeopathy. If you choose to use homeopathy, it is a good idea not to disregard conventional medicine altogether, but rather use homeopathy in conjunction. A good homeopath will not interfere with your choice to use conventional medicine. It is extremely important to inform both your conventional and homeopathic practitioner of all medications and treatments. Skeptics The therapeutic benefit and legitimacy of homeopathy has been up against a great deal of skepticism. There is little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of homeopathic treatments and the dilution process under fire for creating substances that have little to no presence of the original chemicals, sometimes even compared to water. | |||
