Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine does not fall under the tree of conventional medicines. There are many differences that set alternative and conventional medicines apart, a basic rundown on each approach and their fundamental differences is as follows.

Conventional VS Alternative Medicine Approach

Conventional

  • Evaluate and diagnose symptoms
  • Treat the symptoms with synthetic drugs, chemicals etc
  • If treatment is not successful, usually different drugs or doses are used in an attempt to eliminate symptoms

Alternative

  • Evaluate symptoms
    > By taking into account physiological, mental and physical factors internally and in the external environment
  • Trace the symptoms to their root\source
  • Treat the underlying problem that is producing symptoms
  • Treatment takes the form of natural remedies that encourage the body to heal itself

Alternative Medicine Today

There was a time where alternative medicine had no place alongside conventional medicine in western culture. Nowadays, seeing an alternative practitioner is common and they often work closely with conventional doctors. There are some concerns surrounding the basic ideas of alternative medicine such as the use of fasting in treatments and being against immunization. It might be a good idea to speak to your conventional doctor about whether it safe to go through with alternative treatments if this is a concern for you.

Obviously not all alternative practitioners are the same. Accreditation is something you should query before seeing one. Not all states require alternative practitioners to be licensed, but you can still find out their credentials, where they studied and bodies they belong to.
