Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet refers to a pattern of meals common to the countries in the area of the Mediterranean Sea and is characterized by its concept of (the dieter) consuming high amounts of fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, nuts, and seeds with mono-saturated fats from olive oil and minimal protein from dairy, fish, poultry, and meat. Moreover, in this diet, wine is allowed in moderate amounts.

The diet plan follows well-studied aspects in the application of the diet plan. It claims that dietary researches found that cholesterol levels in the blood is less likely to be raised by mono-saturated fats such as those that are found in olive oil and thus, leads to lower problems in heart ailments. It is found that unlike those of animals' (other sources of such type of fats are canola or peanut oil), fats from olive oil and similar kinds lower cholesterol levels as well as those of blood sugar and blood pressure.

Diet experts recommend the Mediterranean diet for those who are curious enough to make an attempt to copy the Greek lifestyle by adding in regular physical activity, consumption of water in high amounts and wine in moderate amounts or grape juice as non-alcoholic alternatives. Meat consumption under this format is also acknowledged, but this must occur only a few times in a month, while fish is taken many times during a week, which provides omega-3 oils that helps in the reduction of risk of cardiovascular diseases and the strengthening of the body's immune system. But the most popular characteristic of Mediterranean diet plan is its inclination to beans, nuts, cereals, vegetables and fruits consumption, which is apparently the inspiration behind this type of diet.

It is easy to adopt the Mediterranean plan to your diet. All it takes is to make the necessary adjustments in your diet that surely already includes meat and poultry, vegetables and cereals, sea foods and dairy among others. You are also allowed to use tofu as meat substitute especially if you are a vegetarian, but you must this do while supplementing your protein intake with legumes. On the other hand, you can also enjoy salads, which contain olive oil, and foods fried in the same type of oil. Regarding red wine, it claims that this drink contributes flavanoids, phytochemicals, and anti-oxidants, while the bacteria present in yogurt are also useful in maintaining health improvement.

By definition, the Mediterranean people consume more healthy fats than any other people, but the nature of the fat counts, and in their case, mono-saturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids even provide the necessary protection from heart diseases and cancers. At the same time, they succeed in extracting these oils by engaging themselves in physical activities that result into a natural process of burning fat. So if you adopt this type of diet, you will also be able to develop a Mediterranean lifestyle that is also backed up by the health benefits of sunlight and clean air.
