Why am I Obese?

One morning, you wake up and you look in the mirror and what you see staring back at you alarms you. You take your fingers and pinch your waist and you are surprised to feel love handles between your fingertips.

You raise your arms above your head and notice that the skin under your elbows is saggy and loose. So there you are, examining yourself and wondering why you are obese?

Being 100 pounds overweight means that you are morbidly obese. How you got there, is for you to determine. Some people just have an unhealthy relationship with food. If they are sad, upset or stressed, they break out the snack food and munch their way into oblivion.

You could be fighting genetics, your metabolism might be off, you might just lack self-control or have never been shown how to eat properly. When was the last time you went for a walk, or did any type of exercise? How much water do you drink? All of these factor into why you are obese.

So what is the difference between being overweight, and being obese?

Using the BMI calculator located on this website, if you score between 25 and 29.9, you are considered overweight.  Scoring 30 or over puts you into the obese field.

Obesity is also set by your financial status. Face it, eating healthy costs a lot more than eating foods that aren’t good for you. Going to the market and buying fish, fresh vegetables and pasta, is liable to hurt your pocketbook more than if you went to the store and bought a pack of hotdogs, buns and chips.

Before you reach for the next miracle diet pill, visit your doctor. Let him put you on a sensible, medically structured diet that will bring the weight off you gradually. If you are morbidly obese, talk to him about the pros and cons of gastric bypass surgery. Please see our section on this website entitled Gastric Bypass for more information.

The weight you are carrying on your body now, took some time to arrive there. The fat is not going to go away overnight, so make the right choices for your health.
