The Sugar Addicts Diet

The Sugar Addicts Diet, this book by fitness expert and author Nikki Waterman seems to be advocating a diet which includes all those naughty, off limits foods other diets frown upon. But, unfortunately for those of us who really are sugar addicts, no such thing. In fact, the basic premise of the book is that white sugar and refined carbohydrates are addictive just as drugs are, and cause craving and withdrawal symptoms when we try to stop taking them. The food industry and marketing companies have a vested interest in keeping us all on the sugar habit, since it keeps us coming back for our daily fix, according to Waterman. This results in sugar being present in many foods that we never think of checking, such as ketchup and canned vegetables, and makes it very hard to avoid sugar completely.

Waterman presents findings showing that white sugar can be responsible for a variety of ailments, from obesity and diabetes, which are well known as being diet based, to acne, depression, candida and even cancer. She then gives a list of symptoms to check, to see whether you fit the description of a typical sugar addict. According to Waterman, you can have symptoms like irritability, lack of energy and headaches as part of the syndrome, which is caused by rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Cravings for sweet foods as often as once an hour keep the cycle going.

The real problem is how to get off the roundabout and rebalance blood sugar levels, and the Sugar Addicts nutrition plan uses a mixture of high protein foods and Omega 6 rich fats to help make it easier. The first step is to become educated in which foods contain hidden sugar, and Waterman presents a detailed guide to identifying them on the supermarket shelves. Once you've thrown them all out, you start a fourteen day plan meant to get you eating more healthily with absolutely no refined sugar in your diet. Of course, this doesn't mean that you wont have any sugar at all in while on the sugar addicts diet, because almost all vegetables and fruits contain fructose and other natural sugars. These are considered less harmful though, because they are unrefined, and absorbed more slowly than white sugar.

One of the best parts of the Sugar Addicts Diet is the chapter dealing with childrens diet. Almost all children eat too much sugary foods, and many suffer from obesity and other health problems as a result. Waterman presents useful ideas for replacing the worst types of snacks with better options, and shows how to tell the difference between really healthy snacks and misleading ones.

The Sugar Addicts Diet is not basically a weight loss diet, even though the title includes the phrase " See The Pounds Drop Off !". It is aimed more at improving general health and feeling better both physically and mentally. However it is quite likely that after reducing sugar intake, weight loss will occur naturally, partly because of an increase in energy levels which may allow more exercise.
